Long Hair Style

Longer wigs fall below the shoulder and tend to emphasize greater sex appeal. Longer wigs tend to be heavier in weight and warmer in cooler climates. They generally are slightly more expensive than shorter styles and tend to be more long flowing styles. Longer wigs require larger amounts of wig cleaning and care products to be used and can take longer to dry.

Human Hair

Human hair fiber used in wig making is the longest wearing of all and offers exceptional flexibility and styling versatility. Human Hair varies greatly in quality and texture. Human hair used in wig making must be processed before it is usable. The cuticle is removed so the hair won’t tangle. It is usually bleached, then dyed for uniformity of color and to match standard color values. The wigs color can be easily darkened or tinted to adjust the color; however, lightening involves bleaching the fibers for the second time and can damage the fiber if not performed by an experienced wig professional. White or gray wigs are rarer and more expensive in human hair only and generally are made in human hair/synthetic blends for this reason.

Cap Size: AVERAGE

AVERAGE SIZES are 21½ inches to 22¼ inches. 95% of wigs are made to fit these sizes, but can be stretched or adjusted down about an inch either way to accommodate smaller or larger head sizes. Be aware that cap sizes vary from brand to brand, and you should make sure before you buy that the cap is right for your size. Some caps will stretch better than others, but most caps can be made smaller.

Standard Cap Type

Most wigs fall into the standard cap design. Standard cap wigs are usually machine made using a variety of methods to strike a balance between looks, comfort, wear and cost to manufacture. Each brand uses their own cap design which they refer to as a standard cap. There are cap designs with more specific features that deserve to be categorized separately, such as capless, monofilament, silk, skin and the Beverly Johnson Stitch-N-Go.

Hand Tied Top/Top Front

Hand-tied top/front wigs have caps where a portion of the top and front hairline are constructed of some type of mesh, usually monofilament or polyester, with individual strands of hair knotted by hand into the mesh. This gives the appearance of the hair growing from the person’s own scalp at the hairline and at the part. Some wigs have the full top made in this manner so the part can be moved to the left, right or center. Other wigs may only have the area directly beneath the original part done in this way. The rest of the cap can be constructed using less labor intensive techniques.
